Forefoot Pain

Forefoot pain, often referred to as metatarsalgia, is pain felt around the ball of the foot when weight bearing. The pain is caused by inflammation between the heads of the bones in the front of the foot called the metatarsals.


Common causes of forefoot pain

There are many causes of forefoot pain, some of the most common are:

– Morton’s neuroma
– Bursitis
– Sesamoiditis
– Capsulitis or synovitis
– Plantar plate injury
– Hammer toes or claws
– High arched foot
– Rheumatoid arthritis
– Gout
– Running or high impact sports
– Sudden increase in training
– Poorly fitting shoes and excessive wearing of high heels
– Being overweight

Symptoms of forefoot pain include:

– a sharp, burning pain in the ball of the foot
– sensation of feeling like there is a stone in your shoe when walking
– pain that worsens when you stand, walk flex your feet or run, but improves with rest
– sharp or shooting pain, numbness or tingling toes
